This history of the largest block women's organization in the United States is not only the story of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority (DST), but also tells of the increasing involvement of black women in the political, social, and economic affairs of America. Founded at a time when liberal arts education was widely seen as either futile, dangerous, or impractical for blacks, especially women, DST is, in Giddings's words, a "compelling reflection of block women's aspirations for themselves and for society."
Giddings notes that unlike other organizations with racial goals, Delta Sigma Theta was created to change and benefit individuals rather than society. As a sorority, it was formed to bring women together as sisters, but at the some time to address the divisive, often class-related issues confronting black women in our society. There is, in Giddings's eyes, a tension between these goals that makes Delta Sigma Theta a fascinating microcosm of the struggles of black women and their organizations.
DST members have included Mary McLeod Bethune, Mary Church Terrell, Margaret Murray Washington, Shirley Chisholm, Barbara Jordan, and, on the cultural side, Leontyne Price, Lena Horne, Ruby Dee, Judith Jamison, and Roberta Flack. In Search of Sisterhood is full of compelling, fascinating anecdotes told by the Deltas themselves, and illustrated with rare early photographs of the Delta women.

User Reviews about In Search of Sisterhood: Delta Sigma Theta and the Challenge of the Black Sorority Movement
This book was exactly what I needed and wanted. I am very please to have found it. -- Perfect For My Collection
I love this book and the history behind it a great read it's like all book it has it ups and downs -- Great Read
This book thoroughly details the history of Delta Sigma Theta since its creation, elaborating on its social and political movements and achivements as well as chronicling the personal issues that plagued the sorority from within. This is a highly informative and ESSENTIAL read for the aspiring Delta. DST has a rich, astounding, and UNPARALLED legacy that is magnificently recorded in this honest and well-written chronicle. My only disappointment with this book was how it was revealed that DST, early in its years, was disgustingly obsessed with color and class. One of their national presidents was actually critisized by members for wearing her natural hair!! DST, in its early stages, seemed snobby and very superficial. But I appreciated the honesty of the author (and the sorority) for admitting these faults. It made me realize how much DST has changed, grown, EVOLVED. The fact that DST admits their mistakes and past weaknesses is more than admirable and respectable and makes my passion to join stronger.
This chronicle was very well-written. It got very wordy sometimes, but if you have a desire to learn more about this organization then you will appreciate the wealth and depth of information provided. -- A Wonderfully Written Chronicle
As a proud member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., I purchased this book many years prior to my becoming a member of this illustrious organization. I highly recommend this book to women who are interested in joining this sorority and to read it at your own pace. If you are expecting information about membership, etc., then this book isn't for you. Howevever, if you are interested in how this organization started 96 years ago and how we developed into the organization that we are today, I recommend this book to you. "Thank You" Soror Paula Giddings for a very well written and informative book about our sorority. Yours in Delta! -- Fortitude
I got this item even before I expected it! It was quick and I have enjoyed my book! thanks -- Awesome!
