User Reviews about Stopping Identity Theft: 10 Easy Steps to Security
I don't bank online and I don't use ATM machines and after reading this, I won't be starting. Who knew thieves had card readers that could steal your card number and pin info from an ATM right after you'd used it. Who knew online banking wasn't as safe as the banks say (well I suspected, that's why I bank in person and why I know my teller's names).
Also I don't use my credit card when I buy stuff at the supermarket or hardly anyplace else and this book has certainly reinforced my will to not take the easy way. Yes, it's harder paying cash and yes you have to budget your money and yes sometimes you can't buy something you see in the store because you don't have enough money in your purse, but guess what, bad guys can't steal money from your bank account if they get that twenty you just spent out of the register. They can't hack cash, so that's they way I'm going to continue to pay.
If you use a credit card or bank on line you should read this book. -- A Must Read if You Use a Credit Card
ID theft happens, no matter how well protected you think you are. In my case, my bank's debit card was used to charge $2,000+ worth of construction work done to lay down a driveway, and then used a few days later for another big-ticket purchase. The company to whom it was charged is a well-respected, local construction firm that claimed this was the credit card number they were given. I filed a report with my bank and, after 10 days, I got the money back in my account. To this day, I have no inkling of how this happened, except that, possibly, the credit card number was stolen by a restaurant worker who had it in his possession when he went to the back room to run it through a credit card machine. (This is why it's best to have a credit card, not your bank's debit card, for public purchases.)
Most people do little, if anything, to protect their identities on and off line.
Given that this instance is the only time I've had my ID compromised, that's not bad. But, over the years, I've minimized it by following many of the same things that this primer on ID theft recommends.
The book's virtue is its simplicity, its no-nonsense tone, and it's straightforward approach with a lot of common sense advice. If you have not taken the time out of your life to sit down and read a book like this, with a highlighter in hand for key passages, you may ultimately regret it: Credit ID thieves are always on the prowl and their numbers are increasing, because it's hard to track these people down and the law enforcement won't bother with small amounts. The best thing to do is minimize, or if at all possible PREVENT, your ID from being stolen.
I have several books on the subject. I like this one because it's the one I'd give my mother--it tells her what she NEEDS to know, in a way that it's comprehensible to virtually anyone.

I had no idea identity theft was so prevalent. I also had no idea that I'd made myself such an easy target. Fortunately, I haven't been targeted. Yet.
Like many, I do online banking, use both a credit and debit card and pay by check. I thought if I was careful about prying eyes at the ATM that I was safe from anyone getting my pin and stealing my money. I guess I was wrong. I'd never heard of card readers before that allow thieves to steal both your debit card number and your pin. I'd never known how thieves could use my checking account info to loot it.
I did however know about the various phishing scams out there and am careful online, but now I'm going to be more careful. And I'm going to follow Scott Mitic's advice and get a copy of my credit report often.
If you have a credit card, debit card, checking account or a computer in your home, you should read this book. I had no idea what I had been letting myself in for. I bet you don't either. -- Eye Opening
The version I am reviewing is the audiobook.
This is a somewhat useful version if you can take notes while you are listening, which you might not be able to if you are driving on your daily commute while listening. I listened to it on the bus and while working out in the gym, so I could take notes, if I needed to. There is a lot of very good advice especially about preventing theft and then minimizing the damage, once done. It can take a lot of time and money to recover your identity from a thief or thieves, so a little more attention to safety should help most of us.
It seems that one aspect of identity theft that I had not considered before was theft of health care services. Because of the new privacy rules (and healthcare's misunderstanding of them) correcting damage done can be particularly difficult to accomplish.
Be sure to share this information with both your children and your parents! -- Very Helpful!
As we all know, identity theft is now almost rampant in society. This resource provides you with the necessary steps we all can take to help avoid falling into fraudulent traps. I really enjoyed these CDs and implemented many of the suggestions. -- Great Resource!
